Loving the Saints of God

The Saints of God and who they are:

‘Ali bin ‘Uthman al-Hajweri [d. 465 AH] said:

Shaykh Abu Yazid Bistami said, “A saint is he who accepts courageously what is commanded (by God) and rejects what is prohibited (by God).” This is because the more a man loves God, the greater is His respect for His commands.

God Almighty has, therefore, upheld the validity of prophethood for good and has done so through the continuity of the class of his chosen people: the saints of God. They are God’s vicegerents on Earth and are fully devoted to Him without the slightest interference of the lower beastly self. It is through the spiritual blessings of the saints that God sends rain from the skies, grows vegetation form the earth and grants success to the Muslims over the disbelievers.

The saints of God are four thousand in number, but they are hidden from the gaze of the common people; and even they themselves don’t know one another. In fact, they are not aware of their own spiritual capabilities and virtues. In short, they remain hidden not only from mankind but from themselves as well. Their existence stands confirmed not only by the Quran and Hadith, but actual experience of the saints of God as well, including myself, by the grace of God.

Those who are entrusted the duty of administration are three hundred in number and are known as Akhyār or Nujabā. There are forty more who are called Abdāl; seven more known as Abrār; four more known as Awtād; three more known as Nuqabā; and one more who is called Qutb or Ghawth, (who is the most righteous man on earth at any given time). All these persons know one another and depend on one another in the performance of their duties. Their existence has been confirmed by the Holy Quran and Hadith, and by a vast majority of the Ummah, called Ahlus Sunnah wa’l-Jamā’ah (People of the Prophetic way and the majority of scholars). [Kashf al-Mahjūb]

Murabit al-Hajj [who resides in Tuwamarat, Mauritania] said:

While some of these terms (i.e. Nujabā, AbdālQutb etc.) are mentioned in the Quran and Hadith, others are not; but their existence has been confirmed by too many of the scholars and saints to deny them.

Loving the Saints of God:

Shaykh Abu Talib al-Makki [d. 386 AH] said:

If you are not from the righteous, see to it that you have love for them, for Allah Most High will look to their hearts, and perhaps He may look at your name and forgive you.

Khwaja Gharib Nawaz Mu’inuddin Chishti [d. 627 AH] narrated:

There was a man who hated the saints. When he died, and was placed in the grave, the people tried to turn his face towards Mecca, but it would always turn away from that direction. The people were astonished at this action. There was a voice from nowhere announcing, “It would be a futile exercise to try to turn his face towards Mecca, because he used to turn his face away at seeing the saints, and that he who would turn his face in disgust from My friends, I will turn My face from him. He is a condemned soul, and on the day of judgement, such people will appear with faces of donkeys.”

Fariduddin Mas’ud Ganj Shakar [d. 661 AH] narrated:

A sinful young man died in Multan. He then appeared to someone in a dream and was asked by him what his condition was. He replied that Allah had pardoned him. He explained that one day, when Khawaja Baha ul-Haq Zakariyya Multani was walking, he had kissed his hand with utmost respect. Due to this act, he had been pardoned.

Shaykh Ahmad Zarruq [d. 899 AH] said,

Know that the spirit of Islam is loving Allah, loving His Messenger—Salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, loving the Hereafter, and loving the righteous among Allah’s servants. [Badl al-Nasīha]

Shaykh Ibn al-Zakari, in his commentary on the above said:

It is related from my master, Abdul Rahman al-Thalabi, with his chain of transmission up to Imam al-Tabari who said, ‘A stranger passed away when we were in Mecca. We took his body to Bāb al-Mala and sat down to prepare for his burial when suddenly he rose up and sat upright. We asked ourselves, “Did he not die?” The stranger said, “I did, but I returned in order to bring you glad tidings and inform you that the most beneficial thing we have is love for the righteous and closeness with them.” Right after he said that, he became a corpse again.’

Shaykh Abdur Rahman ould Murabit al-Hajj [who resides in Granada, Spain] said:

Even if you never get to meet a saint of God, but simply love them and would love to meet them, the saints of God know without you having to tell them. The scholars of our religion say, “A person being blessed with just visiting the lands they reside in, without meeting them, is a great honour in itself.”

May Allah grant us love for the saints of God, allow us to meet them in this life and unite us with them in the next life. Ameen!

Recommended Adhkar upon the completion of Friday prayer

After one makes the Salam from the Jumuʿah prayer and before he changes his position—and in another narration ‘before he speaks’—he recites Surah Al-Fatihah, Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq and Surah an-Nas each seven times. It has been related that whoever recites these will be forgiven for the past and future sins, and will be given in reward according to the number of those who believe in Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. [Fath Al-Muʿin]

The commentary on this is given by ad-Dimyati in Iʿanat ut-Talibin:

It has also been narrated that whoever recites them, Allah will protect his religion, worldly affairs, family and offspring. Our Lady ʿAishah narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever recites Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and an-Nas seven times each, Allah will protect him by them from evil until the next Jumuʿah.”

Ibn Masʿud, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

“After reciting what has been previously mentioned, whoever says:

اللهم يا غني يا حميد، يا مبدئ يا معيد، يا رحيم يا ودود، اغنني بفضلك عمن سواك، وبحلالك عن حرامك
Allāhumma  Yā Ghaniyyu Yā Hamīd, Yā Mubdiʾ Yā Muʿīd, Yā Rahīm Yā Wadūd, Ighnini bi-Fadhlika ʿAmman Siwāk wa bi-halālika ʿan Harāmik
[O Allah! O Self-Sufficing One! O Praiseworthy One! O Initiator! O Restorer! O Compassionate One! O Ever-Loving One! Make me independent, by Your Grace, from everyone apart from You. And (Suffice me) by Your lawful sustenance, whilst excluding that which is unlawful in Your sight.]

…Allah will make him not need to rely on others and provide for him from where he knows not.”

Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

“Whoever, on the day of Jumuʿah, says the following 70-times:

اللهم اغنني بفضلك عمن سواك، وبحلالك عن حرامك
Allāhumma Ighnini bi-Fadhlika ʿAmman Siwāk wa bi-halālika ʿan Harāmik
[O Allah! Make me independent, by Your Grace, from everyone apart from You. And (Suffice me) by Your lawful sustenance, whilst excluding that which is unlawful in Your sight.]

…two Jumuʿahs will not pass him except that Allah will be sufficient for him.”

Ibn ʿAbbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said on the authority of the Prophet ﷺ:

“When the Jumuʿah prayer is finished, whoever says the following 100-times:

سبحان الله العظيم وبحمده
SubhānAllāhiʾl-ʿAzīm wa bi-Hamdih
[Transcendent is Allah, the Supreme, and His is the Praise]

…will have 100,000 sins forgiven and his parents will have 24,000 sins forgiven.”

Imam ʿAbdul Wahhab ash-Shaʿrani said:

“Whoever is consistent in reciting the following every Friday, Allah will take his life as a muslim without a doubt,

Ilāhi Lastu lil-Firdawsi Ahlan wa Lā Aqwā ‘alā Nārʾl-Jahīm fa-Hab Lī Tawbatan wa-ghfir Dhunūbī fa-Innaka Ghāfir udh-Dhanbil-ʿAzīm
[O Allah, I am not worthy of being an inhabitant of Firdaws and I cannot bear the Fire of Hell. So grant me a repentance and forgive my sins as You are the forgiver of a major sin.]

Some have said that it should be said 5-times after Jumuʿah prayer.

ʿArak b. Malik is reported to have stood at the door of the mosque after he prayed Jumʿuah prayer and said:

اللهم أجبت دعوتك، وصليت فريضتك، وانتشرت كما أمرتني، فارزقني من فضلك وأنت خير الرازقين
Allāhumma Ajibtu Daʿwatik, wa Sallaytu Farīdatik, wan-tashartu kamā Amartanī, far-zuqnī min Fadhlika wa anta Khayr ur-Rāziqīn

[O Allah, I have answered Your call, prayed Your obligation and have spread in the land as You have commanded me to do so. So grant me from Your bounty and You are the best of providers.]

[You said and Your Speech is the Truth: “O you who believe! when the call is made for prayer on Friday, then hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trading; that is better for you, if you know. And when the prayer has concluded, then disperse within the land and seek of Allah’s grace, and remember Allah much, that you may be successful” (al-Jumuʿah: 9-10).]

The Saint who asked for Hell

Ja’far Khuldi has said:

“Once Shaykh Abul Hasan Nuri was making the following supplication and I overheard him.

‘O My Lord! If you have to fill Your hell with human beings whom You have created by Your knowledge, power and love, then make me large enough to fill the entire hell so that everybody else goes to Paradise.’

I was amazed to hear this and dreamt the same night that I should go and tell Abul Hassan Nuri that Allah Almighty had forgiven him for the kindness and love he had for mankind.”

In short, self-sacrifice is the keynote of Nuri’s doctrine, which is regarded as the noblest state and the highest success in the eyes of the people of spiritual insight (Ahl al-Basirah). This is because nothing is more difficult in the world than sacrificing one’s life and surrendering the objects of one’s desire. Allah Almighty has said:

“None of you [believers] will attain true piety unless you give out of what you cherish: whatever you give, Good knows about it very well.” [Surah Aali-‘Imran 3:92]

How can giving away of wealth, health, food and garments bear comparison with sacrificing one’s life?

Pornography: the elephant in the room

image

Pornography degrades our society. A few decades ago, pornography was unlawful, prostitution was a crime, “sleeping around” was looked down upon and there were heavy restrictions on adult films. Now, all taboos and restrictions have been abrogated, not only has pornography been greatly accepted in society, it has become a major industry. Today, the content has become more explicit and easily accessible. There are now 1000+ different pornographic magazines. Porn sites comprise 12% of Internet. Even the music industry has become the ‘audio pornography’. All of this is nothing but a highly damaging material to the moral fabric of society, all you have to do is see the clear link with proportionate rises in prostitution, rapes, child abuse, incest, paedophilia, domestic violence, drug and alcohol related crimes, among other crimes.

Pornography is a social ill that has now become the social norm. It is irresponsible of us to turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to this serious problem. It has affected it’s audience in such a way that men now see honourable dressed women and undress them in their minds; and the society wonders, “Why do we still see the ‘patriarchal behaviour’ in the midst of 21st century?!”

Most people think that the solution, for single men, is to get married. What about those who are married? “Well, if women made themselves more ‘appealing’ to their husbands then the husbands wouldn’t resort to porn”, is the common response. The harsh reality for most porn-addicts is that…they will resort to porn, whether they are ‘happily married’ or not married.

Porn-addicts need a serious detox. Hmm, ‘detox’ might put people off, or make them pretend that they don’t need it. Let’s call it, ‘Tazkiyatun Nafs’ [Purification of the Self]! You know, Islamify it a little, since that’s what Islam seems to have been narrowed down to: putting ‘Islamic’ before nouns (Islamic Clothes, Islamic Government, Islamic Finance, blah!) to feel, erm, Islamic?

I put up a post on this blog, two years ago, which highlighted the neuroscientific aspects of pornography and how it effects the mind.  Here are a few paragraphs from it:

Pornography is fantasy. Different scenes present with different women give the illusion of the watcher having a relationship with a new person every time. These “stars” subject themselves to different demeaning sexual practices by the men in the scenes. The acts in their totality are detestable to most mentally healthy people. However, the design of the act in a pornographic scene is to link one or two normally arousing and familiar elements with others that are not. This is how the viewer acquires new tastes in sexual practice. Electromagnetic waves are emitted from the screen with a fantasy that triggers a chemical reaction in the brain, releasing dopamine. The result is a feeling of a real, yet delusional, state of pleasure and satisfaction. The dopamine reinforces the new connections with newly acquired sexual tastes, and the next thing taking place is the man asking his wife to engage in a sexual fantasy that was downloaded into his subconscious.

The sequence of events in the brain is quite disturbingly simple. Synaptic plasticity works to form new connections as a result of watching pornography, and newly learned memories are stored. Since the experience is an arousing one, dopamine release results in very strong reinforcement of those new connections. Now that the scenes are in long-term memory, two consequences take place: 1) since the very same system stimulated by cocaine is being triggered by pornography, addiction is developed; and 2) the man will often attempt to create his own re-enactments with his wife, which leads to a great disappointment. The re-enactments do not live up to expectations because instead of many different women, it’s now only one. Worse yet, this only one woman doesn’t sound, act, or look the same as the ones downloaded into his mind. Although the first couple of re-enactments might be exciting, soon reality will strike and dopamine will no longer be released because pleasure is no longer derived.

Sadly, that’s not the end of it. After such a disappointment in the actual experience due to the unrealistic fantasy-based expectations, the brain not only refrains from releasing dopamine; it actually dips below baseline levels. It goes into a depression response that results in disappointment, dissatisfaction, and unhappiness in the marriage since the wife is “not up to what he expected”. Despite the efforts by many women to “spice things up” and even subject themselves to the demeaning acts that have been artificially downloaded into their husbands’ brains, the pornography-addicted husbands will only enjoy themselves for a very short while before losing interest. Meanwhile, the wife feels unattractive and emotionally abandoned despite her best efforts, not knowing that she couldn’t compete with the dopamine buzz offered by pornography.

What’s alarming about this information is that the brain acts as a whole entity; its plasticity is global. Change in one area affects other regions. It is a literal re-wiring of overall neural connections as a result of pornography viewing. The extent of influence on other parts of the brain and cognition is an area of research requiring attention.

To sum up, porn is a problem that is at our doorstep, why then are we worried about issues in the other parts of the world? Porn is ruining marriages and families. Even ‘students of knowledge’ have become effected by it, who masturbate over porn at night and then share “Islamic posts” during the day. We need to tackle this sickness head-on and give it the serious attention that it deserves.

“Oppose both the Self and the Devil” — Imam Busiri

Imam Muhammad al-Busiri [d.695 AH] says in his al-Burdah (The Prophetic Eulogy):

And contradict both the Self and Devil, and disobey!
And if they give true advice to you, still look sceptically.

Imam Ibrahim al-Bajuri [d. 1277 AH] said in explanation of the verses mentioned above [Sharh al-Burdah pg. 31-32]:

His (Busiri’s) words, “And contradict both the Self and Devil“, meaning if your Self and Devil order you with a matter, or your Self or Devil forbid you from a matter, then oppose them for they both are your enemy.

His words, “and disobey” (them both), indicate that it is not sufficient to merely oppose them—because one may oppose them to that which they both are pleased with—rather it is necessary to disobey them.

The author preceded the mention of the Self before the Devil because the Self is more harmful than the Devil; its tribulation is greater than the Devil’s tribulation. This is because the Self is an enemy in the form of a friend and a person is not aware of the plots of a friend. Also, it is an enemy from within, as opposed to the Devil for he is a clear enemy. And it is said, “Escaping from the Self is the greatest blessing, because it is the greatest veil between a person and Allah ﷻ”.

Sahl bin Abdullah said, “Allah has not been worshipped with a thing like the opposing of the Self and desire”.

So generally, the opposing of the Self is the peak of worship and the first of the levels of felicity. Look to the action of the Devil with your father (Adam)! The Devil swore that he was a sincere advisor to him, yet how is he with you when he has sworn to misguide you?

His words, “And if they give true advice to you, still look sceptically”, meaning if they both offer you advice, such as; they both say to you, ‘Fulfil this desire so that you may focus towards obedience with an untroubled heart’; or they both say to you, ‘Be gentle with yourself in worship so that you are able to be consistent in it’, or to increase your worship so as to attain high ranks or its like. Be sceptical of them by attributing treachery to them, because nothing emanates from them except deception. Thus it is said, ‘Devil opens ninety-nine doors of good for a person so as to land him in one door of evil’.

The speciality of this verse, as well as the one after it, is that the one who is persistent in its (recitation) will overcome his Self and his Devil, and will be granted protection by Allah from them both, Allah willing.
